Reps. Deutsch, Brown, and Michael Moore Address Problems with Election Certification
Moore Commends Lawmakers' Efforts

BOSTON - Tomorrow Congressman Peter Deutsch (FL-20), candidate for U.S. Senate, along with his colleague Congresswoman Corrine Brown (FL-03), and filmmaker Michael Moore, whose recent movie Fahrenheit 9/11 addressed important questions surrounding the 2000 election, will be available to speak to the press about the 2000 Election debacle and Moore’s film which addresses the injustices that took place in Florida. This opportunity for the media took place on Wednesday, July 28, at 9 a.m. at the Marriot Copley Hotel in Boston during the Democratic Convention.

The opening sequence of Fahrenheit 9/11 features footage from the Joint Session of Congress on Jan. 6, 2001. Following a motion by Congressman Deutsch to halt the Electoral College verification, several representatives, including Florida’s Alcee Hastings and Corrine Brown passionately called for the support of one needed senator to trigger an inquiry.

Because no Senator stepped forward, the results of the election would forever stand. The electoral vote was verified and the way was cleared for George W. Bush to be sworn in as the nation’s 43rd president. Had Reps. Deutsch and Brown been successful with their protests on January 6th, 2001, further investigations would have been conducted.

Mr. Moore strongly supports the legislation introduced recently by the Representatives. The legislation removes the current requirement that a Senator and a Representative must both sign a challenge to the certification of the Presidential election results. Instead, a single member of either the Senate or the House would be able to protest the certification of the election, removing a roadblock that prevented the members from contesting the results of the disputed 2000 election.

Representatives Deutsch and Brown, fought valiantly in 2000 to require Congress to investigate the election irregularities. Mr. Moore says the Representatives exhibited "great courage" in introducing the bill, and he has pledged to support the initiative as it moves forward.
