Deutsch brings his Senate campaign to Panhandle

U.S. Rep. Peter Deutsch, D-Tamarac, appeared in Tallahassee today at the start of the Panhandle portion of his eight-city tour formally announcing his candidacy for U.S. Senate.

Deutsch, a 12-year congressman from Broward County, said the issue that separates him from Democrats Betty Castor and Alex Penelas - as well as the eight Republicans running for the Senate - is a plan for universal health insurance. Deutsch said there are 3 million people in Florida without health insurance, including 700,000 children, and that treating them with Medicaid or unpaid emergency room care is much more expensive than providing a health care plan.

"I am proud to be running this year with John Kerry, a great and patriotic American who risked life and limb for our freedom," said Deutsch. "I believe President Kerry will turn the fortunes of this great country around and get us moving in the right direction again, so first we need to get John Kerry elected president."
